SEO Email Scam
I don’t normally open unsolicited emails and when I do, it’s always with an itchy delete key finger. Before Internet scams, you could usually detect the overt snakiness of the cold caller yelling before your phone hit the cradle. While, not exactly subtle, this excerpt from the SPAM email received makes me shiver and feel for vulnerable neophyte Internet business owners. The email message had no company name or link, just an invitation to receive a quote via email. Question. What other clues do you see?
“We can put you at the top of Yahoo and Google today. Our company now has exclusive technology that can put your website(s) above every other company on all the major search engines. Tired of SEO plans that get you nowhere? Tired of blowing your budget on pay per click only to lose position immediately? We offer guaranteed results and promotional pricing that will beat any other program you have used.”
Another way to look at this would be to credit the writer with some cleverness in understanding how to appeal to the psychology of his target audience. A profile might consist of: new Internet user, one uneducated in matters of search marketing (you don’t have to “blow your budget” with PPC), someome with get rich quick dreams but too lazy to read search engine guidelines, other scammers, etc.
