I think it's a pretty serious issue. I love advanced Google search capabilities, use them in my sourcing and recruiting business as well as teach others how to leverage the service in various blog posts and webinars.

However, lately my colleagues and I have been repeatedly blocked by Google search with the message that we are sending “automated queries”. No, I am not sending automated queries; I can’t even type very fast.

All I do is use search operators (intitle:, inurl:), asterisk (*), and set the number of results to 100 per page; so why is that suspicious? A friend, who does advanced searches, tells us that he blocks all of his office. Attendees of my webinars can’t reproduce the search string examples that we study without being blocked. Google starts off with a few requests to enter “captchas” and then blocks us completely.
I received a pretty bizarre email from a Google Developer... read the rest (and please comment) here:

A new error message has appeared. Anyone seeing this?

We're sorry...
... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

See Google Help for more information.

You can simply renew your IP address in command prompt if you have a problem searching manually. I have had this problem too. Google tracks your IP while you're performing your searches. So by resetting it you "renew" your online identity. I have a post on my blog with the nitty-gritty: blog.calvinjsmith.com/posts/bypass-google-blocked-searches/

why would google block automated rank checkers? logic follows that u track your pages2make amendments to have more appropriate info to increase ranking, so by allowing auto trackers, they will result in better searh results? i use one for fireplacesupermarket.com, as its quite new, getting my head around the data thats needed (what people want to see), knowing my ranking is the only way i can improve my service, which benefits goole and the user. I cannot see a way it could be abuse to adversley affect google?

I have started using bing and it does not stop me the way Google does saying: Prove you are a Human or something so until they stop I will just use bing and it seems to be a better system. I am really thinking Google is forcing people over to it.

... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we'll see you again on Google.

I get this message when i try to log on to orkut

Even Scroogle.org doesn't help any more. After I'd running a program that polled Scroogle at one query every 5 seconds, Scroogle.org banned my IP address. I can't even ping scroogle.org any more. A traceroute shows that the ping gets to the node just before the actual server, but the actual server ignores it. Has anyone else seen this?

I wanted to use Scroogle because 1) they don't have terms of service that prohibit scraping, and 2) they seem to have come to some agreement with Google on that issue. That seemed to be the proper way to run tests against Google Search.

I've tried mailing the contact address at Scroogle; I'm willing to pay them. But so far, no answer.
