Good Morning Everyone!
Today is is an exciting day for me. It’s my first day on my new job of working for myself. I can already see that there is a big difference in working for a boss and being the boss. Another thing that strikes me about my first day on the job is how different certain things are from my previous job. I’m getting the feeling that maybe I have been missing out on some benefits. Am I totally off base or could this be true?
New Org Chart

Let’s get one thing straight. I’m in charge.
New Office Staff

I love the people I worked with at my previous job, but not nearly as much as my better half/bookkeeper.
New Office Space

This is pretty much where world domination will occur.
New Company Switchboard

I challenge anyone to show me a better solution.
New Commute

Traffic consists of the ottoman and any clothes or objects dropped on the carpet.
New Accounting Department

I’ve been using QuickBooks for years and love it.
New Server

- Intel 3210 Processor – Quad Core
- 4GB Ram
- 2 x 500GB HDD SATA
- Raid Card (Raid 1)
- CentOS 5.x 64bit – cPanel/WHM with Fantastico
- 2000GB Bandwidth
- 5 IPs
- Fully Managed
Stare at those stats for a second… Yeah. It’s all good. I stumbled onto a dedicated server about a month ago and will be writing more about this subject later. Not having a good dedicated box had been holding back my business back more than I had realized.
New Smoking Policy

Nuff said.
New Bandwidth Usage Policy

If I had a boss, trust me, I wouldn’t be able to hear him. It’s going to be loud. I mean loud, brother.
New Company Car

I like the black one.
New Coffee Maker

Don’t even think about becoming the Foursquare mayor of this joint.
New Dress Code

I don’t wear pajamas.
New Salary
No complaints so far :)

Congratulations, Emory. I see you have already set up a comprehensive list of office policies and established a dress code (What, no pajamas?). This might help you further refine your dress code… http://www.thehappyguy.com/pajamas.html I can’t help but notice that you have also overlooked a few crucial policies, so this primer might also be useful… http://www.thehappyguy.com/office-policies.html
Now, I do have a confession. I never thought of getting a pretty lady in a bikini to float in the pool while I work. Hmmm, on second thought, I might not work if I did!

David, you have really thought this whole thing through. Office humor is not optional, it is mandatory.
Getting permission from my wife to post the bikini pic was actually a test of my sales skills–can’t believe she let me do that.

All I can say Emory is: You beat me to it! Yes, I’m headed in the same general direction as yourself. Different time-line obviously, but headed there none the less.
Congrats on the new office policies, location, commute and choice of secretary (figured that one would be a no-brainer or be brained).
You’ll have to tell me what led to this one day. Would love to know what inspired you. Tell your lovely wife hello for us will you? Hope to see you guys again one day soon!

Hey Scott, thanks, that’s good to hear. You’ve definitely got it in you. Yeah, we need to catch up. I got you covered on the pizza when you make the trip to Atlanta!

Sounds like a plan! Donna is covered up with classes atm so as soon as we can work up a 3-day’er, we just might take you up on it. ;)

What a great chuckle for the day! As an aspiring entreprenuer, I love to read about other success stories..but this one with the humor behind the success makes it even better! Thanks for the inspiration!

ENTREPRENEUR..Yes, aspiring I am! However, guess I need to make sure I spell it correctly next time I comment! HA! Got to laugh at ourselves, it is the humor that keeps us going! Best of luck to you Emory!

Congrats – have added my vote to a few others on Stumbleupon, and bookmarked this site on delicious (thought I had done so before). Will give you an Alexa review too, since I seem to be in the habit of writing those recently :(

Friends, thanks very much for encouraging me on this journey. You’ve inspired me to report back to you here on what I learn along the way.
July 16th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Congratulations! So you’ve gathered all the periphery associated with starting out on your own, but I was hoping to see your closet of hats: CEO, CFO, COO, CSO, HR, Marketing Director, Sales Director, Chief Engineer, Lawyer, Accountant, Bookeepper, IT, Clerk, Receptionist, Event Planner, Networker, Proofreader, Customer Service Rep, Buyer, PR Pro, Education and Training Coordinator, and Janitor!

Looks like an organizational chart close to me heart … well, except for Starbucks – replaced with Tim Hortons.

Emory,
Congrats and for the record, this is one of the best blog posts I’ve ever seen!

Good to hear from you, Keith!

Great policies, I particularly like the new bandwidth usage policy! Yeah, crank up that POD radio til the old boss thinks, “what’s that strange new tune i keep hearing?”
